Scott Hunt has been swimming competitively for 17 years; you could say it is an important part of his life. Hunt, who is a senior English major, has finished up his third and final year on Cabrini’s swim team.

“My parents have been my biggest source of support. 17 years is a long time to spend driving to swim practices and going to meets, but my parents did it with a smile every time,” Hunt said. “My parents taught me that humility, diligence and a sense of humor are more important than any trophy or record.”

Hunt started his athletic career at the age of five. He began at Lower Merion Aquatic Club.

“I swam the 25-meter freestyle and have not looked back since,” Hunt said.

He stayed at that club until sixth grade, when he switched to Suburban Swim Club in Newton Square. When Hunt hit high school, he swam for the varsity team at Archbishop Carroll High School through all four years. At Carroll, he qualified for the state team three years in a row.

“My twin brother Bradley always had my back, both in and outside the pool,” Hunt said. “He’s my best friend and the person I look up to the most. Bradley has taught me that people who want to see me fail are irrelevant.”

Upon entering Cabrini as a freshman, Hunt made the decision not to swim.

“I wanted to adjust to college life. I had no idea what I wanted to do academically,” he said. “I have to admit, I really missed swimming.”

Head Coach Cindy Ikeler played a big part in Hunt’s return to the sport. When Ikeler started working at Cabrini, Hunt was in his sophomore year. The two had a conversation about Ikeler’s vision for the team and Hunt was encouraged into rejoining the sport.

“I am happy to say it was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Hunt said. “She and her fellow coaches, Tim, Kevin, Chris and Bre, have built this program from the ground up.”

As for the 2014-2015 season, Hunt has nothing but positive words. His usual events are the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

“Veterans and fresh faces alike added to the strength of this team. We are really building something special,” Hunt said. “Every year we are improving by leaps and bounds. There is nothing that this team cannot overcome.”

Hunt stressed how important it is to remember that being a collegiate athlete is a privilege. The value of his team is something Hunt also greatly emphasizes. Being a member of such a supportive team that is always there for one another makes the bad races worth it.

“There are many different personalities on this team. Our variety is what makes us so unique,” Hunt said. “The camaraderie of this team is something I have always enjoyed and will deeply miss.”

In addition to swimming, Hunt has a part-time job at the Haverford YMCA. He is also a member of the editorial staff for Cabrini’s literary magazine, Woodcrest, which is run by the English department. Hunt and the rest of the Woodcrest staff members work to cultivate an aesthetic culture on the campus.

As a senior, Hunt has left some parting wo of wisdom for his teammates he will soon be leaving behind.

“Always say thank you to your coaches. Be grateful for the compliments, and listen to the critiques. It will shape you into not only a better swimmer, but the best person you can be,” Hunt said. “Continue to build the foundation for this team and nothing will stand in your way
