Cancer, we’re all affected by it. Some of us have friends or family fighting or have fought it.

Each year over one million people are diagnosed with cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, everyday two out of every three people are diagnosed.

Help save a life from cancer by participating in Relay for Life with Cabrini College on April 12, 2014

This  12-hour event is held from 4 p.m.-4 a.m. in the Dixion Center Gym.

Cabrini College’s Relay for Life fundraises the whole event for the American Cancer Society by holding certain activities and fundraisers held by individual teams participating.

The theme to this year’s event is ‘Wizard of Oz’.

Maggie McElroy, a senior exercise science major, is also one of the co-chairs of this event.

“It takes a lot of time and effort by the committee members to run this event,” McElroy said.

There is much work that goes into making sure this event is successful and making sure the expectations of how the event is supposed to turn out are fulfilled.

“There is so much planning, fundraising and organizing to make this event successful,” McElroy said. “We all have to work together to make sure all of the different elements of the day are coordinated and run smoothly.”

One of the more popular events that students can expect to see is the wallyball tournament. For those who aren’t familiar, wallyball is slightly similar to volleyball except it is played in a squash court.

The rules are also different as well. In wallyball you are able to bounce the ball off the sides of the squash court.

There will also be a scavenger hunt, a band for entertainment, themed laps, a rave, bingo, a frozen shirt contest and the other events are in the process of being organized.

Anyone interested in participating in the event can go to www.relayforlife.org/pacabrini and sign up. You can either create your own group or you can join someone else’s group if it interests you.

Everyone participating in this event are encouraged to stay awake the entire time of the event by walking around and participating in the events. Each team can provide blankets and pillows for anyone that needs a nap.

The committee for Relay for Life has been working hard to make sure that food is sponsored for everyone. The food will be donated by local restaurants and bakeries. Dinner will also be provided by Sodexo.

Mark your calendars for April 12 and join the fight against cancer.
