For those who have not yet heard of the term “Dad bod,” it is one of the latest fads. This chubby dad-like body type has become extremely popular in the past few months.
Instead of the usual six-pack beach body, men have been switching it up and intaking more calories to get that old dad bod look.
Both men and women are raving about the so-called dad bod but some people are really not feeling it.
Biology major, Todd Walker, thinks that the dad bod should be shut out for good. He thinks it promotes bad eating habits and could lead to health problems at an early age.
“I don’t think it is a trend,” Walker said. “I think it is more of a social phenomena. I think the dad bod is absolutely repugnant.”
Criminology major, Bobby Layden, said he also does not agree with the term dad bod. He thinks it is just another excuse to avoid going to the gym.
“When did exercise become such a bad thing,” Layden said.
Are boys just following a social trend or is it an excuse to pack up on calories instead of hitting the gym?
Dad bod may not be for everyone but some girls seem to be interested in the not-so-typical “beach body.
Kathleen Conlon, exercise science major, says she does not mind chubby men.
Sometimes, packing on those extra pounds could result in more comfy cuddling.
“I rather someone be healthy and a little over-weight than malnourished,” Conlon said.
Cabrini’s head swim coach Cindy Ikeler feels the “dad bod” trend could have more a positive impact than a negative one in today’s society.
“I’ve heard of the term dad bod and it just seems a way to celebrate normal guys,” Ikeler said. “Guys that may not prioritize their looks before other things such as family, relationships, work, etc. and are not overly concerned with appearance or perhaps how others perceive their appearance because that isn’t the most important aspect of their lives.”
Ikeler, who became a first time mom this past summer, feels the “mom bod” could become a trend, as well.
“It’s refreshing in a way and it would be nice if women could receive the same leniency,” Ikeler said. “Celebrating mom bods instead of being so critical of looks or assuming woman should have the stereotypical perfect body as if that’s what’s truly all there is to strive or live for.”
So what does this all mean?
It is safe to say as far as social acceptability goes, go ahead, cancel that gym membership, crack open a soda and break out the potato chips in the recliner, because dad bod’s are officially in!
