Before you kick the bucket

We all have heard of the term bucket list, but what does it really mean? According to the dictionary a bucket list is not only a noun, but it is a list of things a person wants to achieve or experience, before reaching a certain age or dying.

The term bucket list actually comes from the English idiom kick the bucket, which is defined as to die. It remains unknown as to where the term kick the bucket originated, but has become a term widely used in modern language.

The point of a bucket list is to create a clear and concise list of tasks to be accomplished. A bucket list is based on an individual’s wants and desires. It centers around the activities they wish to experience.

“Getting married is probably the No. 1 thing on my bucket list,” sophomore Ally Fiorelli said. “I haven’t really thought about it much actually. It might be something I decided to make concrete and work on.”

A bucket list can be made up of varies goals. It can consist of serious long-term goals such as getting married, graduating college, getting a job or going sky diving. Or it can have short-term goals aimed at being accomplished in the near future.

“I am really into my bucket list,” junior, Danielle Damico said. “I have all sorts of activities on it really. I mean the main reason I like having a bucket list is because it gives me something to look forward to. One of my goals is to go on a cruise, so it has given me something to save my money for. Bucket lists are all about working towards a goal, I think everyone should have one.”

Although there are many different opinions on what the real purpose of a bucket list is for, the good thing is that it gives you the chance to make it your own. There is no straight definition of what a bucket list should look like. There are plenty of possibilities.

We all know we are going to die eventually. It is a well known fact. Some people have big aspirations for the goals they would like to accomplish. While other people have every day tasks they would like to see completed. All these things fall into the category of a bucket list.

The question that remains is, what will you do before you die?

  1. I have a wonderful bucket list! And, believe it or not, as I cross some items off of the list, I keep adding new ones! Glad to hear that others are thinking about creating one earlier in life. Nice job!
