Tattoo Certifications

Pennsylvania:

  • There are currently no state health regulations on tattooing in Pennsylvania, however, there are city regulations
  • However, performing a tattoo on a person under the age of 18 without the consent of their parent or legal guardian is considered a misdemeanor and, if convicted, could be sentenced to pay a $100 fine or three months in prison or both
  • Philadelphia:
    • Tattoo artists in Philadelphia must obtain a Body Artist Certificate from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to legally practice
    • If you can provide legal documentation of full time employment as a tattoo artist prior to 2002, you do not have to complete an apprenticeship training program
    • You have to apprentice under a Philadelphia Certified Body Artist for three years
    • Must complete Bloodborne Pathogens Training

New York:

  • Must take an infection control course and pass an exam
  • Must obtain a permit from the New York State Department of Health
  • Must display the permit in a visible location within the studio
  • Licenses are valid for two years
